CHAPTER NINE

Silvia didn’t know how they’d ended up out back with a crackling fire, cozied up with a blanket, sitting in the same oversize lounger. One minute they were sharing pieces of their past, and the next, she was giving him a tour and he’d fallen in love with the outdoor living area…so here they were.

“I’d never leave this spot if I lived here,” he told her.

“You have a pretty awesome place yourself,” she retorted.

Silvia stretched out her legs and crossed her ankles, trying desperately not to brush against him any more than necessary. Then again, she didn’t need to touch him to be utterly turned on and ready to rip his clothes off.

But she tried to stay in control of the situation and not act like a teenager with a crush.

“This view is what sold me on the place,” she admitted. “All of the windows on the back of the house and this firepit area, the pool, didn’t hurt, either. I’ve only been here six months, so I missed the autumn leaves. I can’t wait to see all the colors this fall. This is the perfect place to grab a sweatshirt and cuddle next to a fire with s’mores. Oh, maybe I need an outdoor rocker—you know, for the baby?”

“This is a great home for raising a child,” he told her.

Silvia smiled. “It is. I’ve already decorated the spare room a hundred times in my head.”

Nick shifted, turning toward her. “You’re feeling okay now?”

She glanced his way, then back to the flames licking the darkness. “I’m fine. I just needed to eat. The day got away from me, but I promise to be more aware. I’m still getting in the mind-set that I’m not the only one I need to look out for anymore.”

Nick slid his hand beneath the thick blanket and covered her flat belly. Silvia tensed, her eyes darting to his, and she found him solely focused on her.

“I respect your independence, but you have to know that I’m going to worry and I’m going to be pushy and I will likely piss you off. It has nothing to do with not thinking you can’t do this alone and everything to do with the fact that you don’t have to.”

Silvia swallowed, unable to form words. Between his comforting touch and intense stare and gravelly voice, Silvia couldn’t concentrate. Nick possessed every single quality she didn’t want to want. He said and did all the right things…but opening herself to the possibility of hurt was not something she could ever do again.

Neither of them was in a position to make life-altering decisions right now, either. They had a baby to think about, and she had to keep that in the forefront of her mind. She would never allow a child in her care, especially her own, to ever feel unwanted or second best. This baby had to be the top priority, above her wants and dreams and desires, above her fears.

“What are we doing here?” she finally asked, holding his gaze.
